what is blueprint?
blueprint is a 2-day high school learnathon and hackathon run by the HackMIT club. following a full day of in-person workshops covering topics like web development, game development, and hardware, 200+ local high school students are given eight hours to complete a coding project in teams of up to four, with prizes for various categories.
project details
every fall semester, the HackMIT club begins preparations for blueprint, typically held in mid-spring. the marketing committee's most pressing task is to design splash, or the blueprint website.
typically, the HackMIT website is a long-scroll format with 2D assets drawn on Adobe Illustrator. however, because blueprint is a smaller scale event, the marketing committee typically uses the blueprint cycle as a chance to be experimental with splash.
my role
as the head of the marketing team, i led a team of ten MIT students through the process of ideating and designing assets for splash.
working on splash is a highly collaborative process -- most decisions, from the theme to the color palette to the mascots are decided as a group. it was my role to facilitate these discussions and find the best balance between everyone's opinions.
tools i used
the website assets were created using Blender -- most of the committee members had no prior experience with 3d modeling, so i put together various written and video tutorials, as well as hosted many office hours to help everyone complete their tasks. the homepage features an interactable 3d model implemented using the React library.
i then edited and put together everyone's work using Adobe Illustrator and Figma to create a cohesive wireframe and prototype for the DevOps team to reference as they coded the website.
challenges
1. hackmit has never used blender for its website, and has stuck to a long-scroll format for the past few cycles, therefore there was minimal documentation or precedent for what the website could look like. this presented a really interesting challenge!
